The new paradigm of nutrition analysis is called functional health. The overall goal is to maximize whole body function at all levels - cellular, genetic, emotional, mental and physical. The doctor will begin with a chiropractic examination and may refer out for urine, blood, stool, breath or saliva specimens to evaluate various molecules such as heavy metal toxins, hormones, minerals, vitamins, fats, proteins, or organic acid chemicals, etc. In many cases very few laboratory tests need to be evaluated, and the doctor can assess a person through other means and implement simple but highly effective nutritional suggestions.
When combined with the life changing treatments of chiropractic, nutritional support and dietary changes can initiate significant recovery in patients with chronic health conditions.
Functional health protocols have been developed that provide restoration of tissue function. Common treatments may focus on the musculoskeletal, digestive, immune and detoxification systems that have a calming effect on the whole body. By building a good foundation in these core control systems, the brain or hormone system can now regulate and orchestrate the rest of the tissue functions at the highest level. The net effect is that patients begin to feel better with more energy and symptom reduction or reversal.
Our functional health background
The doctors are well versed in the clinical nutrition sciences, and have been kept abreast of the evolving science based functional health research by teaching and attending national symposiums on a wide range of topics such as chiropratic, cardiology, immunology, gastroenterology (digestive), toxicology, endocrinology (hormone) and others.
The doctors have taken the highest level of education in the field of functional health with the esteemed Institute for Functional Medicine. They have completed completed a multi year advanced practice module program developed by the Institute for Functional Medicine (IFM). Drs. Mayfield and Frank are one of the few doctors in Minnesota that have attained the prestigious IFM Certified Practitioner (FMCP, IFMCP) board certification in functional health.
Our center has been a leader in the midwest in functional health. In 1999 we established the Minnesota Center for Functional Medicine to treat a wide variety of internal disorders. During this time we have been able to improve the lives of hundreds of children and adults with chronic health disorders. Many adults with previously diagnosed depression, irritable bowel, hormone imbalances, high blood pressure, inflammatory bowel diseases, inflammatory arthritis, skin disorders, migraines, etc. have been helped with chiropractic / nutritional / functional health programs.
What Functional Health Means to You
Functional health is the adjustment of our body tissue system imbalances using natural therapies and fundamental approaches to restore harmony to the body. Using emerging research and effective interventions, Functional Health treats illness and promotes wellness.
The goal of Functional Health is to support the body in its own healing processes by understanding a person's genetics, environment, physiology and individuality. These all play a part in their health today. Disease and even symptoms are just manifestations of underlying imbalances influenced by lifestyle and past experiences. The Center for Well Being is dedicated to discovering the source of symptoms.
Functional Health Fundamentals
From chronic illness to disease prevention, functional health systematically addresses the unique physical, mental, and emotional needs of all patients. By understanding each patient's genetic, environmental, and lifestyle influences, functional health delivers transformative care to promote optimal health and well being.
As a patient-centered practice, functional health provides the framework to identify and treat the root causes of disease, not just the symptoms. Patients and doctors work together to develop a personalized approach to care, prioritizing lifestyle changes and individual interventions.
Functional health and conventional medicine both play important roles in patient care. By seeking out root causes and treating them with evidence-based, clinically verified methods, a functional health approach - paired with conventional medical care - results in improved health outcomes, reduced costs over time, and a greater overall patient experience.
Functional Health is Upstream Medicine...
Clients come to us because we care and they want to get healthy and feel better. Diseases don't just happen overnight. Long-term imbalances, left untreated, become chronic diseases. These imbalances are created from poor nutrition, lifestyle, physical and emotional habits, which ultimately diminish the quality of your life. Drug therapies commonly used to treat diseases become long-term band-aid approaches and at times cause problems of their own - never addressing the underlying cause of imbalance.
"Upstream medicine" explains the principles of Functional Health. It's the intervention at a point where imbalances become apparent and adjustments to influencing factors and triggers, such as spinal health, nutritional, exercise and lifestyle habits, are made before they create dis-ease in the body.
...We intervene upstream rather than letting you go over the falls
